Somewhere in the Ozarks, two golfers decided the 19th hole at Payne’s Valley needed one more obstacle: gravity. The result was a golf cart off a cliff, a 50-foot plunge into the lake below, and — by every account of the people watching — two guys who are lucky to be walking around today instead of starring in a very different kind of headline.
Payne’s Valley, the Tiger Woods-designed public course near Branson, Missouri, sits along a lake framed by the Ozark Mountains — exactly the kind of scenery that makes for a great photo and a terrible driving surface if you clip the wrong curb. Video shared by Rocky Metcalfe shows the cart clearing a stone curb near the 19th hole, sailing through a gap in the fence, and disappearing into the water. The white roof was visible just under the surface afterward, with the two riders bobbing to the top and diving back down — not for each other, but for their phones and wallets.
Nobody was seriously hurt, which is the only reason this story is funny instead of tragic. It’s also the only reason the internet gets to enjoy it rather than argue about liability waivers. However it happened — reckless driving, a bad angle, or someone saying “watch this” right before it — launching a golf cart off a cliff is the kind of move that requires either total confidence or a complete lack of it, and there’s no in-between.
Somewhere, a Payne’s Valley pro shop employee is filling out an incident report and wondering exactly what goes in the box marked “cause.”
