TaylorMade’s TP5 gets all the attention — tour bags, TV commercials, the whole show. But sitting one shelf down and about fifteen bucks a dozen cheaper is a ball most golfers have never actually tried: the Tour Response. Turns out it might be the smarter buy for anyone who isn’t cashing PGA Tour checks.
The TaylorMade Tour Response is a 3-piece ball with a real cast urethane cover — not the cheaper ionomer stuff budget balls use to fake the feel. For 2026, TaylorMade rebuilt it around what they’re calling a Speed Wrapped Core: a soft inner core wrapped in a progressively firmer outer layer, which is a fancy way of saying it’s trying to get you more ball speed without turning into a rock in your hand. They also added their new microcoating paint process, which is thinner and more consistent than the old coating — worth mentioning mainly because it’s the same underlying tech at the center of TaylorMade’s ongoing paint-claim lawsuit with Callaway, so at least they’re putting it somewhere useful.
Who it’s actually for
TaylorMade builds this one for swing speeds in the 90-105 mph range — which is to say, most golfers, not tour pros. At roughly 70 compression, it’s soft enough to feel on wedges and around the green, but not so soft it feels dead off the driver. If you’ve been curious about a TaylorMade TP5 but balk at the price, this is TaylorMade’s answer to that exact hesitation.
How it stacks up on price
At around $39.99 a dozen, the Tour Response undercuts the $54.99 TP5 by a solid margin while still using a real urethane cover — the same value pitch as Titleist Tour Soft in that price bracket. If your current ball budget is “whatever’s cheapest at the pro shop,” this is the upgrade that doesn’t feel like a splurge.
The verdict
Nobody’s putting the Tour Response in a tour bag over a TP5x, and that’s fine — it was never built to win that fight. What it does well is give mid-swing-speed players real greenside spin and a soft, controllable feel for less than $40 a dozen, without the marketing noise that comes with TaylorMade’s flagship line. If you’ve been playing a two-piece distance ball because urethane felt like it was priced for someone else’s budget, the TaylorMade Tour Response is exactly the ball built to change your mind.
