Gary Woodland has the second-highest spin rate off the tee on the entire PGA Tour. That’s usually a stat you brag about. This week at the BMW Championship, it’s the exact problem he’s trying to fix — and the fix is a golf ball most casual fans have never heard of.
Woodland swapped his standard Titleist Pro V1 for the Pro V1x Double Dot during the first round at Bellerive Country Club, a change caught by Tour photographers before Woodland said much of anything about it. The Double Dot isn’t a retail product — it’s a Custom Performance Option Titleist builds for a narrow slice of tour players who generate huge ball speed and too much spin off the tee, and it’s built to launch lower and spin less than a standard Pro V1x.
That description fits Woodland almost exactly. He’s currently sitting at the top of the Tour’s clubhead speed stat at 127.55 mph, paired with a spin rate of 3,004.6 rpm that ranks second-highest on Tour. Translation: he’s swinging fast enough to hit the ball a mile, but spinning it enough to cap his own ceiling. The Double Dot is Titleist’s answer for exactly that combination — the same logic that’s already working for high-speed players like Bryson DeChambeau.
The ball has a real recent track record behind it, too. Cameron Young made the Double Dot semi-famous by switching to it the week he won his first PGA Tour title at the 2025 Wyndham Championship. Woodland’s timing isn’t a coincidence — he’s fighting to stay inside the Tour Championship bubble, and if a spin-killing golf ball is what turns a promising week into a great one, he’s not going to overthink the decision.
You won’t find the Titleist Pro V1x Double Dot on a shelf — Titleist doesn’t sell it retail, it’s strictly a fitted, tour-level option.
